Planning a Cairo Citadel visit
Cairo Citadel stands on the Muqattam hills and brings together a fortress setting and the Muhammad Ali Mosque. Saladin began the fortification in 1176, and it became a ruling residence under al-Kamil. The mosque belongs to a much later chapter. Visit with that distinction in mind: the defensive site and the domed religious building tell different parts of Cairoβs history.
The Citadel is a separate stop from the churches near Mar Girgis and from the Al-Muizz street corridor. A combined outing therefore involves moving between visiting areas. Use the Coptic Cairo guide to choose the churches that interest you, then compare the wider Old Cairo tours if you want transport and guiding across more than one area.

Citadel combinations
The museum combination offers an admission option; the shorter private church combination also has an entry option. For the flexible tour, select a Citadel or Old Cairo itinerary.

Muhammad Ali Mosque: courtyard, prayer hall and domes
Muhammad Ali Mosque is inside the Citadel and is included in its admission ticket. Its Ottoman-influenced design brings together a courtyard, prayer hall, central dome and half-domes. The monument profile gives 1848 as a historical date. Look first at how those spaces relate to each other, rather than treating the mosque as simply another feature of the medieval fortress.
The courtyard provides a different architectural experience from the enclosed prayer hall. Arcades and a domed fountain shape the outdoor space; the central dome and half-domes organise the interior. Following that change from courtyard to hall gives the visit a clear focus even without a long list of technical terms. The architecture guide sets this design alongside the churches and other mosques of Old Cairo.
Leave enough of your visit for the mosque itself. Its published closing time is 16:00, earlier than the Citadel grounds. A late arrival at the fortress can therefore leave little time for the building that prompted the trip. If the mosque is your priority, put it before any optional additions and confirm the current opening time for your visit date.
Admission and separate closing times
The listed Citadel admission is 550 EGP for foreign adults and 275 EGP for foreign students, including Muhammad Ali Mosque. These are monument admission categories, distinct from the price of a guided outing. Student admission requires a valid student card and applies up to age 24 under the ticket conditions. Keep the relevant identification with you when using that category.
The grounds close at 17:00, with last entry at 16:00 under the regular ticket schedule. The mosque closes at 16:00. The ticket portal distinguishes summer and winter opening starts, so confirm the start time for the day instead of relying on a single year-round hour. Plan the afternoon backwards from the mosque closing time, including the time needed to reach the actual entrance.
Listed vehicle charges are 25 EGP for a taxi or car, 75 EGP for a minibus and 100 EGP for a bus. Treat these as vehicle charges and arrange the drop-off and collection point separately; ask about parking availability if needed. The transport guide helps distinguish a city journey or hotel pickup from an airport transfer.
Choosing the right combined tour
A seven-hour combination visits the civilization museum, Citadel and Coptic sites including the Hanging Church, St. Barbara and Abu Serga. It includes accommodation pickup in Cairo or Giza, an air-conditioned vehicle and an Egyptologist guide. Admission is included only with the admission option; lunch is an optional add-on. This is the longer choice when both museum displays and religious buildings belong on the dayβs programme.
A four-hour private combination connects Muhammad Ali Mosque with Coptic churches and Ben Ezra Synagogue. It includes a private guide, private air-conditioned transfers and bottled water. Entrance tickets require the ticket-inclusive option. Pickup from airports or outlying areas costs extra. Choose this format when the fortress and church visits matter more than adding a museum, and allow separately for a meal.
The guided selected-landmarks format also offers a Citadel and Muhammad Ali option. Select that combination explicitly: the starting price attached to a museum-only version is not a Citadel quotation. Entry covers the selected landmarks. Lunch belongs to the VIP private version or a paid private-tour addition, and the felucca ride belongs to the VIP option. Choose the route and inclusions together rather than comparing only the headline price.
Sultan Hassan and Rifai as a separate visit
Sultan Hassan and Rifai face each other at Salah al-Din Square and use their own combined ticket: 220 EGP for foreign adults and 110 EGP for foreign students. Their published visiting hours are 09:00 to 17:00. The Sultan Hassan guide explains the courtyard, iwans and the relationship to Rifai. Set aside this visit deliberately rather than treating it as part of Citadel admission.
Dress and photography at the religious site
Cover shoulders and legs and carry a headscarf for religious visits. Follow the instructions at each entrance. The Citadel ticket portal lists mobile-phone photography as free; apply any building-specific restrictions inside. For a day combining different religious places, keep the same considerate approach throughout and avoid turning an active place of worship into a backdrop for intrusive photographs.
